About me

My name is Jang Quintus, born in 1952, grown up and living in the beautiful Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. My friends call me “Mëckejang” in Luxemburgish which could be translated as “Flyjohn”. I am a passionate fly fisher and a fly tying instructor. You may wonder that a guy from Luxembourg  is tying classic salmon flies. (where the only salmons still existing are tons of stocked parrs which are killed in electric power stations on their way to the sea. Project sponsored since approximately 15 years by the EU in the framework of their project ‘Salmon 2000).

Well, a few years ago I had the opportunity to join for the first time in my life a party of friends on a salmon fishing trip to Ireland. As I had no idea about salmon and seatrout flies I bought some 150 flies from a well known low cost fly shop in the UK for this first trip. Those bought flies looked quite good but a lot of them died during the knotting to the line, some even did not survive several removals from my fly box. Nevertheless I caught my first 2 salmons during this trip and being back home, I decided to tie my own salmon and seatrout flies for the next trips to Ireland. As I had to learn some new fascinating techniques to tie a few hundred flies, I went to read a lot about modern salmon and seatrout flies. From now on it was a small step to classic salmon flies. Some old books from Ken Sawada (where I learned the techniques for mixed wings and feather treatment) and Mikael Frödin added to some own know-how quickly produced results in first nice classic Salmon flies in frames for decoration of my tying room.

Now a few years later, I am able to tie quality classic salmon flies, and offer them as such or framed at a reasonable price. Please have a look at my classic salmon flies on this site.

During my Fly Tying learning phase I started taking step-by-step pictures of the flies I learned tying from my instructors. A few hundred of pages with detailed Fly tying instructions have accumulated over the past decade. To share my knowledge with my (unknown) fly tying friends I decided in 2009 to start publishing a detailed instruction on a monthly basis. You are welcome to download the pdf file from the Fly of the Month section. If you missed one or the other fly, don't worry, you can download all flies from the Fly Archieve section of this site.

Last but not least, do not hesitate to drop-in a comment. Positive or negative, suggestions and comments are always welcome and helpful. Do it by sending a mail or leaving a note in my guestbook
